Student Leadership and Digital Citizenship

I've just finished a Blackboard Collaborate session on Anne Mirtschin's Tech Talk Tuesday. http://techtalktuesdays.global2.vic.edu.au/ It was great to be invited back on the webinar. 

Abstract 
about the session:- 

We often think of student leaders as leading sports terms, or being representatives on Student Representative Councils, or organising fundraising etc.
In the 21st Century, students can be much more sophisticated leaders. They can be citizenship leaders and provide real authenticity to curriculum delivery. They often have a better understanding of the world they operate in than teachers do,. They can also create content that other students will be highly responsive too.
Mark Richardson will demonstrate how student leadership modules for CyberSafety and Digital Citizenship can be planned, delivered, assessed and evaluated. Such modules can be vital to the success of these programs in schools. He will draw on two successful programs conducted with Grade 5 students in the Hobson’s Bay Network of DEECD, Western Metropolitan Region. This module structure he will outline can easily be adapted for other year levels.

Students as eLearning Leaders Project 2011 - CyberSafety Module

I have been working as part of DEECD, Western Metropolitan Region, Hobson’s Bay eLearning Leaders' Network, [A Partnership Program with Dell] to develop a six part Leadership & ICT module for Year Five students.

Finding a pedagogical model for this was a challenge. So I'm really looking forward to reflecting on and tweaking the learning model after this event

What comes next are some slide which combining two learning models and how they are to be used in this project.

The Hobson’s Bay Network Leaders' Network meeting on Tuesday [Sue, Kevin, Clare & Geoff] gave direction to what you see is written here. What is here is still a draft and will be further discussed next week. It is published for study purposes only.

What is student leadership?
 
Student leadership encompasses the school’s provision of:
• formal and informal learning opportunities which develop the competency of individuals as leaders and effective participants.
• processes and structures for student representation and the incorporation of students’ views into decision making and the life of the school. [Not Relevant to this project]

The development of student leadership skills involves opportunities which encourage students to:
• act in roles of responsibility with integrity and honesty.
• foster a sense of vision and purpose.
• work with others to determine and achieve collective goals.
• take on responsibilities and use decision making skills in order to carry a project through to a successful conclusion.
• be active, reflective listeners who respond effectively.
• earn the respect of others through their actions.

What’s the Pedagogical Model?

• It’s based on the Kids Teaching Kids pedagogy.
• This has been used at many Student Environmental Conferences run by Kids Teaching Kids. A number of schools in Hobson’s Bay Network send or have
sent students to their events in recent years,

There is also a bit of Challenge Based Learning in the pedagogy as well.
• This is Action / Solution Based Learning.
• In this activity there will be a Big Idea or Challenge for students to approach.
• Students will provide an action or solution to that Big Idea or Challenge by the end on the activity.

• Creating Resources for their classes back at school.

Being safe online [CyberSafety] is important for all users of the Internet.

Show how we can make our students to be all great digital citizens.

So what will the 6 weeks look like?
• Each has a half day session and the network Professional Learning Centre
• Maybe 4 students form 5 schools = 20 students
• With 1 Dell laptop each + EduStar Image
• Teacher support
• Technical support
• Back at school activity

Ultranet - Release Two. Why can't I access my students?

This blogpost is to let off a bit of steam! I usually don't do this via my blog It's about the Release Two of the Ultranet. For anyone not familiar with what that Ultranet is click here.  I've spent a lot of time developing professional learning materials for the first part on the Ultranet [Release One]. I've not no issues with Release One. It is now stable and is a very useful toolbox for students and teachers. I'm currently working on the incorporation of Bloom's Digital Taxonomy and the Ultranet at my school. See earlier blogpost about an Elluminate session I did on this.

My frustration is Release Two, where teachers can design online learning tasks for their students. For the DEECD Ultranet Getting Started Guide for Release Two click image below.

In primary schools, classroom [Home group] teachers are linked to their students by a timetabling module of the DEECD CASES adminstrative system. However, as a specialist teacher, [ICT Coordinator], there have been consistent problems linking teachers such as myself with all students in the school. While this has supposed to have been fixed it hasn't. I really want to write learning tasks for students in a number of grade levels at my school. These lessons would also model good online curriculum design for my colleagues. Now to do this, I need access to the 24 grades in my school, but when I login I get access to just 2! [See below].
So I've got no access to the missing 22 grades of students! I really hope this is fixed up soon, as it is holding back Ultranet implementation [ student tasks and teacher professional development] at my school.

Looking after your DEECD leased notebook [NTPP]

Notes to support session - Looking after your notebook [ Part of elearning PD in 40 minutes]

What will you get out of the session?
• A basic understanding of notebook care and maintenenance
• Resources on notebook care and maintenenance

In the last 10 years I have learnt a lot about the DEECD Notebooks for Teachers and Principals' Program [NTPP]. In no particular order is a summary of my learnings.

1. When you get a DEECD NTPP notebook, you have to sign an agreement. Read this and understand it. If you signed without reading, then do it now.

2. Remember that all use of DEECD ICT Systems is covered by the DEECD Acceptable Usage Policy of ICT Systems.

3. The Physical Stuff

• Cleaning, Storing & Charging

Clean regularly with supplied cloth. Less regularly, clean with wet and dry wipes.

• Warranty and Insurance [Refer to DEECD Notebooks for Teachers Site for details]. Basically wear and tear covered under warranty. If it is not wear and tear [i.e. abuse] or if it is theft then there are excesses involved.

• Power Adapter
Even though those Power Adapters on a MacBook have a magnetic connection, be aware of trip hazards and electrical issues. Digital projectors, Interactive WhiteBoards and Ethernet [blue cords] can be trip hazards.

• Keep your notebook as fully charged as possible

• Shut down your computer regularly, i.e. don't leave it in sleep mode all the time. Re-starting the notebook resets the computer.

4 • The Software Stuff

• What software is pre-installed?

They are all in Macintosh HD > Applications. Try them out

• Can I install software on my DEECD Notebook?
Yes, if you are licenced too or it is Free and Open Source Software. You will need to know your notebook password.

• Self maintenance

Two things here, keep the software to update [Software Update]

Do this updating at school!

You can also use Disk Utility if you feel confident, Repairing permissions is a good idea every so often
It's in Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities. Try it out if you like


 

• Viruses. Do Macs get viruses? This is what Apple says http://www.apple.com/macosx/security/
DEECD notebooks come with Symantec Antivirus. Use it regularly

• File management. Keep your files tidy and well named

• Back ups Do this regularly, this is your responsibility - both to purchase a drive or disks and to do this. These can be purchased chaeply these days. Apple has a nifty back up facility called Time Machine. See http://www.apple.com/macosx/what-is-macosx/time-machine.html

• Wireless [eduPass] Works throughout the school. Any connection problems, turn airport on and off
  

5.  Tech support
